Pinhole photos | by Sroyon Mukherjee
“The task of an alternative photography is to incorporate photography into social and political memory, instead of using it as a substitute which encourages the atrophy of any such memory.” —John Berger, Uses of Photography
PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHS OF FAMILY TOYS
The two images below are part of my latest project, documenting our family toys with homemade pinhole cameras and paper negatives. The first one shows two generations of toy dinosaurs: plastic and wood. Wooden toys – like dinosaurs – are almost extinct.
The next photo was the only Indian entry featured in the World Pinhole Photography Day 2021 online exhibition. To blur the background, I used an in-camera trick which is described on the exhibition page.
PINHOLE PHOTOGRAPHS OF A STREET MARKET
Another one of my recent projects centres around a local street-market in Kolkata. These photos, along with my article on street-markets, were published in Black Feather magazine (Tampa, Florida). A PDF excerpt of the magazine, containing my article, may be downloaded here. One of my pinhole images was featured on the magazine cover:
Three more sample photos from the same project:
HOMEMADE CAMERAS
Finally, three of my homemade cameras, made entirely from household waste. This cardboard-box camera takes photo-paper or sheet film up to 4×5". Its features include tilt, shift and a choice of flat or curved film-plane. I described the build in an article for 35mmc.
This cake-tin camera (shown resting on a "tripod" improvised from a cardboard box) has four pinholes on four sides, making 360° panoramic paper negatives:
